April had the presense of mind to capture a few video clips of some of the music being played at the party for Jim. What a treat! She was having trouble getting the pics\videos off her camera and I took a look late last night and WOW! Here is a clip with some great Jim Hurley violin playing, I am so blown away by this…

Happy Birthday Jim!

Jim's Cake!

Dear Jim-

We had a party for you this last weekend. We wanted to celebrate your birthday and also note your passing. You should have seen it (perhaps you did!) so many of your friends came. Some traveled a long way just to remember you and reminisce with old friends. The party was at Del Valle on the far side of the lake in one of the picnic areas. It was a really fun party man! Brian King hired a BBQ guy who cooked the most awesome food: ribs, chicken and yes potato salad. You would have loved this food too Jim, it reminded me of the times we would stop at that BBQ place in Oakland at 2 in the morning after a gig for some real BBQ ribs and beef. Mike H. and I were going head-to-head on the ribs for a while before we both gave up, too full to eat!

Before the food fest though, Dave Koolhoven led us though a memorial of sorts. He read a poem himself and the other folks stood up and said a few words or shared a story about you, cool huh? I even managed to get up there and say a few things as hard as it was. It was a surreal event in a lot of ways. The kind of thing that I would expect you to show up for for, in fact I expected you to walk around the corner many times that day, only to realize that was not going to happen. It was these kind of things that I loved to join you on, I never thought we would be doing this for you, I still can’t believe you are gone and even after two months I still feel incredibly sad over losing you. (as all of us do I am sure).

There was a table with lots of pictures of you going way (waaaaay) back. Christy created some really cool collections of pictures and even had the original hand written songs that you had stashed away displayed in a book. Stevie Z. came down from Oregon and brought a collage also of the time you guys had hunting records and hanging out, he is a cool guy, I am glad I met him. Your Sunburst Les Paul was there in the center. That was the saddest part of the table for me. It was as if I was viewing your body or something, it made me really sad everytime I looked at it. Lisa made a really cool playbill thing that said ‘Farewell Tour’. It looks like a vintage concert poster, really cool man, wish you could see it. I managed to convert a bunch of demo’s and Cement songs to digital and with Scott’s help with produced two CD’s of your work. Scott did the cover art and had it printed at Kinko’s and I used those CD blanks that look like little 45’s. A few people caught that little detail, especially Craig and Stevie Z. I burned 75 copies and we gave them all away to those who showed up for the party. Not bad huh?

After we ate we had a raffle! Yup we had door prizes buddy! When we were helping your mom and Christy get your place cleared out we held on to a few treasures that we gave away. My girls (April and Veronica) made sure that everybody had a ticket and then Lisa P. and Dave K. did the honors pulling names and giving out treasures like the Pink Flamingo and an Ethel Mermen record, it was a gas man!

We finished the day with a Nashville style jam session. There was a half dozen guitars playing, couple basses, some congo’s and lots of percussion, Jim Hurley was there playing violin. It was raining as some really nice music was played and that just added to the mood and the magic. Your mom was right there enjoying the music with David and your nephew Brian. I was next to Scott playing guitar for a while, it really felt healing and sad at the same time. We did Knockin on Heavens door and Anny sang that. It was touching, and I cried while we played. We also did Secret Agent man dude woohoo! (among many other songs I can’t remember)

The final thing we did was we all signed a big balloon that your mom brought. David and Brian, holding hands, walked way out in the middle of the field and released the balloon into the sky. I watched it fade slowly away and remembered again that you are gone forever, never to see us again on this earth. This made me feel really sad and I watch till by eyes burned looking for you in the sky, my tears cooling the sadness I felt. I miss you so much Jim. I feel like I let you down, I wish things could have turned out different.

I still have a lot to do myself so I will keeping pushing on like all of us I guess. Jim, you were blessed in this world even if you didn’t know it. You had so many friends that loved you (and still love you) I hope you finally figured that out. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you and the friendship that we had, thank you my friend. I will never forget you. I love you bro.

“There’s a future out there somewhere, just rise” Fuckin -A brother, everyday is hard, but all I have to do is rise and that’s what I’ll keep doing. See you again someday man.

Better never to have met you in my dream than to wake and reach for hands that are not there.

Lisa and I made it out Saturday night to see Slackenloader play at the Lounge in West Valley Bowl here in Tracy. They kicked ass! We really had a great time. It was cool to see old friends and to get out of the house. I have been working the Slackenloader web site last few months and I really needed to get out and actually see the band play! And as I mentioned before they did kick ass! Scott London, my old friend and bandmate from Cement Trampoline, was on guitar and I was really impressed. It seems I have forgotten what a talented guitarist he really is, man I tell you he was smoking! Eric Johnson, the other guitar player is also an old friend and we go way back, it was great to see him also. Of course my good friend Mike was playing bass, I see Mike a lot, but not very often playing. Anyway we had a really great time, thanks guys!

Jim Scott CD

Scott and I are working on a CD (two really) that we hope to make available to Jim’s friends in the coming weeks. One will feature Jim’s solo stuff, some heart wrenching , beautifully written songs that he recorded over the years and another highlighting Jim’s work in Cement Trampoline. This music will be compiled from original masters in some cases to rough cassette recordings that have been restored as best we can on others. Our original goal was to raise some money to give to Jim’s family to help cover expenses but also to make sure that Jim is always remembered. What a better way to remember Jim and to keep his spirit alive than to hear his music, feel his pain and look into his heart and soul through his songs. Jim was a wonderful guitar player and a talented song writer. He is missed by myself and so many of his friends, it’s still so hard to believe that he is gone…

BTW, I just purchased the CD blanks that we will use to make the CD, I got these… pretty good huh? ;-)

Workin’ On The Rig!

We spent the weekend getting the rig ready to roll! I fixed a water heater issue (see the soot in the pic) and worked on a propane tank problem. My truck drivin’ friend Mike went for a ride with me and gave me some pointers on backing the beast into tight spots, that was cool, thanks Mike! Oh, and we washed it! Here we are last year forging a river. Lisa crossed on foot to get this shot, thanks honey!

Another Song From Jim…

I have listened to this song several times tonight and thought someone else might enjoy it too! I remember first hearing it and really loved it from the beginning. Jim was here and we were converting old tapes that he had from gigs and stuff and we converted this one along with the stuff with he and Jeff Otto. He seemed pretty happy that I liked it and didn’t complain too much when I played it a few times (too many). I’m pretty sure this was boombox-recording-acoustic-in-the bathroom technique that Jim enjoyed -live and raw. Oh and I really am not sure the name of this song for some reason sorry.
